Dear Sir.

Your note of the 10th of March last, and the accompanying docu ment, from the 2d auditor, directed to Wm M Lewis, have been handed to me and and explanation requested. In answer to the exceptions taken by the second Auditor during the examination of the Vouchers of Wm M Lewis, Number 14, for sup plies furnished Fresno Indian Agency during the quarter ending the 30th September 1859, By way of Explanation, I have to state, That at the close of said quarter, I made out three sets of vouchers as required by the regulations of the In dian Department, for the respective amounts due each Creditor, all of which after being receipted by the Creditors, and the payments thereon certified to by me,- was forwarded to supt Jas Y Mc Duffie, San Francisco, for examination and pay ment. - On the receipt of which by said supt Mc Duffie, He returned them to me with an allowance of One thousand (1000) dollars payment thereon. With instructions requiring me to so alter those Vouchers or accounts, that they would show an advance of One thousand (1000) dollars Only.- The balance due to be shown on Vouchers not receipted.- On the receipt of which, I proceeded to make out the Vouchers and accounts as instructed,- retaining the Original Vouchers receipted & certified to,- Two of which Original Vouchers receipted by Wm M Lewis & Certified to by me is by his request herewith in closed for the use of the Department,- On which original amt, $85.95/100, Then [will?] paid on the 15th of Feby 1860 fifty (50) dollars,- leaving a balance due Wm L Lewis of thirty five 95/100 dollars.- As shown by a statement of the whole amount of expen ditures for supplies furnished Fresno Indian Agency from the 1st day of July 1859 to the 15th March 1861 inclusive, with a credit given each account, for the respective amount paid each Creditor. - Which state ment and, Accompanying Letter of Explanation un der date of the 30th April 1863, was [illegible] to the address of the Comr of Ind. Affs, Washington City D. C. on or about the 22d April 1863.

Inclosed herewith, also please find two copies of Vouchers in the name of Alex Kennedy, receipt by by him & Certified to by me which vouchers is by his request forward for the use of the Dept.- On which Vouchers by a refference to said statement as above refered to, It will be seen, That there was Paid

Paid one hundred & twenty five (125) dollars, leaving a balance due him of, One hundred dollars.
