Dear Sir.

Your note of the
10th of March last, and the accompanying docu
ment, from the 2d auditor, directed to Wm M
Lewis, have been handed to me and and explanation
requested. In answer to the exceptions taken
by the second Auditor during the examination of
the Vouchers of Wm M Lewis, Number 14, for sup
plies furnished Fresno Indian Agency during
the quarter ending the 30th September 1859, By way
of Explanation, I have to state, That at the
close of said quarter, I made out three sets
of vouchers as required by the regulations of the In
dian Department, for the respective amounts due
each Creditor, all of which after being receipted
by the Creditors, and the payments thereon certified
to by me,- was forwarded to supt Jas Y Mc
Duffie, San Francisco, for examination and pay
ment. - On the receipt of which by said supt Mc
Duffie, He returned them to me with an allowance
of One thousand (1000) dollars payment thereon. With
