Sir:
I have the honor to acknowledge the recept of your letter to me dated Sept. [7th?] 1864, relation to arrears of pay due to the late Sanders Hastings MD deceased as surgeon in the Indian Department of California. In persuance of instructions therein containted I applied to [illegible] as San Francisco, to assist me in findings the original vouchers of the claim. Enclosed I transmit, his original reply. In that event, as further instructed by your letter of Sept [7th?] 1864, I have executed a [illegible] Bond in the [illegible] of One Thousand Dollars, as indemnity to the United Stateds in paying me the amount claimed, which I also herewith transmit any by [illegible] adjustment of the matter.
