Washington City D.C. Dec 5th 1865 D.N. Cooley, Esq. Comm. Indian. afairs. Sir: [I?][beg?} leave to enclose the Power of atty. of Rudolph Scherfel. Schoolmaster on the Mendocino Indian Reservation, and to ask that the ammount due to him for his services from the 1st day of April 1860 to the 3rd October A.D. 1860 be paid at an early day. Know all Men by these Presents: That Rudolph Scherfel do make, constitute and appoint John Ferguson my hue and lawful Attorney, for me and in my name to adjust and settle a certain claim of mine for services as School master on the Mendocino Indian Reservation California from the 1st day of april A.D 1860 to the third day of October A.D. 1860 and to receive any sum or sums that may be due and receiving to me and on account of said services. with power also an attorney or attorneys under him for that purpose to make and substitute, and to do all lawful acts requisite for effecting the premises; hereby ratifying and confirming all that the said attorney or substitute or substitutes shall do therein by virtue of these presents. IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereunto set my hand and seal the fifteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand, eight hundered and sixty five Signed Sealed and Delivered in the Presence of Rudolph Scherfel E.V. Sutter [Illegible] State of California City County of San Francisco. [SS.?] On this Fifteenth day of August A. D. One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty Five before me, Emile V. Sutter a Notary Public in and for said City [&?] County, duty commissioned and sword, personally appeared the within named Rudolph Scherfel whose name is subscribed to the annexed Instrument as a party thereto personally known to me to be the individual described in and who executed the said anneexed Instrument, and he the said Rudolph Scherfel acknowledge to me that he executed the same freely and voluntarily, and for the uses and purposes therein mentioned.
