Copy San Francisco Cal August 5 1856

Hon P. Clayton 2nd Auditor U.S. Treasury Washington D.C.

Sir:

I address you at the request of Col R. McKee late Indian Commissioner who informed me that after several years delay, his accounts have been referred to your office for settlement. There is one item in his accounts, which has been disallowed at the Department, probably on the strength of a report I made on it, on the 15th October 1853 - in which report I am now satisfied on a reexamination of the papers, I did Mr McKee injustice. My decision was that I could only allow him for salary, and expenses to the 5th May 1853, the date on which he received my letter of the 31st March 1853, from Washington.

I now find that in that letter I directed him to proceed at once, and close up his accounts, and make necessary arrangements to

settle with me "on my arrival in California."

As I did not reach San Francisco until about the last of September or 1st of October 1853 it was not possible for Mr McKee to comply with my orders, and in point of fact, he did report himself for settlement, and release from official responsibility, the day following my arrival.

I also find on examination of the case that I paid B. D. Wilson, Mr McKee's colleague in the Los Angeles district up to the date of my arrival at that City. In justice to Mr McKee, I state these facts, and express the opinion that he is justly entitled to his salary, and expenses up to the end of the month of September.

I have the honor to be Very Respect'y, Your Obdt Servt, E. F. Beale Late Supt Indn Affs Cal.

I regarded it as my interest as well as the interest of the Indian Service to retain Mr Hoffman and [accordingly?] I [appointed?] him my Clerk on [entering?] [illegible] the duties of my office,
