SN Refers to the supression of gay or sex-related information or materials by governments and government agencies including the courts. For censorship by specific institutions and societies and organisations use headings beginning CENSORSHIP followed by the name of the institution e.g. CENSORSHIP IN THE MEDIA. Such headings should only be used if censorship is a regular aspect of the institution's interaction with gays. It is usually preferable to use a more general heading, characterising that institution's or group's attitudes to gay people such as ARMED FORCES AND GAYS or SOCIALIST PARTIES AND GAYS, or for more blatant cases HOMOPHOBIA. For censorship or refusal to carry gay advertising by the media use DISCRIMINATION IN ADVERTISING.
