Russian Mulberry Trees for Silk Culture.

[left column]

It is only a few years ago that the culture of silk was thought to be impracticable and unprofitable if not entirely impossible, but the experiments and experience of the past few years has demonstrated the fact, beyond a doubt, that these Western States are better adapted to the culture of silk than many European countries which have cultivated it for centuries. The culture of silk is better adapted to home industry than any other branch of work which opens as large a field in the commercial market, it being valuable as a commodity and always in demand. It particularly commends itself to women and children of the rural districts as an occupation of an intelligent and moral bearing, not requiring constant duty, but enabling the parties to pursue their household duties, and it is attracting a wide spread attention throughout the United States. The Russian Mulberry is by far the best variety for silk culture. It is a very rapid grower, and grows to be very large, often reaching the height of fifty feet, and from three to five feet in diameter, and is perfectly hardy. The leaves are mostly lobed

[right column]

or cut and make unequaled food for the silk worms. The fruit has an aromatic flavor, and sub-acid sweet taste and is very much liked by some, although there are other varieties which excel it in this respect. The Mennonites who first brought it to this country, use it as an ornamental hedge plant, and it really makes a beautiful hedge. Our stock is grown specially for the mail trade, and we offer them at the following prices by mail, post paid: 2 to 4 inches high, 40 for $1; 100 for $2.00. 4 to 6 inches high, 25 for [$]1; 100 for [$]3.50. 6 to 12 inches high, 15 for [$]1; 100 for [$]4.50. 12 to 18 inches high, 10 for [$]1; 100 for [$]6.00. We have never found a hollow one. Free from rot. They are very solid and heavy, and will keep a year if wanted. It is medium late, ripening about with the Late Rose.
