In Richmond Hurstings Court February 11th 1858 On the application of Charles Reese a free man of Color emancipated since the year 1806, who desires to obtain permission to remain in this Commonwealth and reside in this City, it is Ordered that the Justices of this Court be summoned to appear here on the fourth day of the next term to hear and decide on said application. Know all men by these presents that I. A. T. B. Merrill of the City of Richmond and State of Virginia, have manumitted, emancipated and set free and by these presents do manumit emancipate and set free a mulatto man slave, Charles Reese, aged forty years; and I hereby declare him the said Charles Reese to be entirely liberated from slavery, and entitled to all the rights and privileges of a free person with which it is in my power to vest him. The said Charles Reese hereby emancipated is a mulatto of bright complexion, about five feet and nine inches high and is abouty forty one years of age. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twentieth day of November in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty seven. A. T. B. Merrill seal

City of Richmond, to wit: In the Office fo the Court of Hurstings for the said City, the 21th day of November 1857. This deed was acknowledged by A. T. B. Merrill a party thereto and admitted to record at half past nine o'clock. A. M. Teste Ro: Howard H. A Copy Teste, Ro: Howard, Clk

State of Virginia; City of Richmond, to wit I, Robert Howard, desk of the Court of Hurstings for said City, hereby certify that the above is a true Copy, from the records of the said Court. In Testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of said Court, this 5th day of December 1857. Ro: Howard, clk.
