The undersigned respectfully request the Court of Hustings for the City of Richmond to grant permission to George Sherman a free person of Colour, to remain in the state and reside in the City of Richmond. They have known George for many years and know him to be of good character and that the interest of the City will be promoted by granting such permission. Given under our hands this 25th day of July 1859.

In Richmond Hustings Court, November 14, 1859 On the applicaiton of George Shurman, a free person of color, emancipated since the year 1806, who desires to obtain permission to remain in this Commonwealth and residein this City, it is ordered that the Justices of this Court be summoned to attend here on Thursday next to hear and decide on said application.
