Transcription Conventions We are attempting to get the information in these menus into a tabular format--this allows for easiest cleanup and analysis!
- Spelling: Use original spelling if possible, even if it seems like a word is misspelled.
- Capitalization: Retain original capitalization.
- Punctuation: Use original punctuation when possible.
- Marginal writing: You can ignore marginal comments such as ones about VAT, delivery, or allergens, etc. You can also ignore any slogans or descriptive paragraphs about the restaurant, as well as any printer-created headers or footers on the menu.
- Making tables: Menus come in many different formats. We want to take the information contained in them and put them into tables. Refer to the documentation for how to do that by clicking on the Table Encoding link available from the Help tab above. Add " ==SECTION HEADER== " to separate the sections. Add a " | Name of dish | Description of Dish | Price | " to create the column labels for a table.
- Line Breaks: Hit
Enter
once after each line ends. Only use a blank line after a new section in a menu only as it will begin to create a new table.
