Money is scarce so you must excuse the frank on this.

USA General Hospital Cor. 6th & Master Sts. Phila. Oct. 15, 1862.

My Dear Friend -

Your letter is just rec'd & read with the greatest pleasure after so long a silence on your part. I suppose I must excuse you as your [underline]change of base[/underline] must of course interrupt postal communication. I replied immediately to your last written on your arrival in Balto. and not receiving a reply wrote again in a short time. Not receiving an answer to my second letter I had only to write to your people at home to find out where you were and what you were doing. Much surprised was I on Monday to receive a letter from Mary informing

that you were again with Capt. Wetherill. I was much pleased to learn of your improved condition, and hope your restoration may be permanent, but knowing you as I do I have my fears.

I am sorry my letters did not reach you for in one of them was a letter from Ann received on the James River containing a petite photograph. I should have sent it before but I was unable to go down to the Knapsack [soom?] for some time after I came here.

As it has been some time since you have heard from me of course you will want to know first of all how I am at present. I am glad to be able to give you a very fa-

I am on my last half page and have one item more of greatest importance to me. When I left the Regt there were various sums due me from various persons. Corp Cashman owes me $5.00 John Knapp the same amount. Ben. Ward borrowed $2.25 to buy butter for the Capt's Mess. I am now entirely out and have been for some time. I sent most of my money home. If you can send me some I wish you would as I wish to make some purchases before I leave. $10.00 would do me very well. You need not dun for me unless you are short yourself.

In haste with much love. Henry

who has charge of the Ammunition now. Do you think I could have the chance should I come back? Capt W. promised it me when I left but I may have been gone longer than he anticipated. You need not ask him, but just give your opinion. If I were able to stand marching I would go at once to the Co. Your must go to if you are able when I return. We will come out all right yet.

I have a thousand things to tell you - since I must not trust to paper - some I have not time to write.

I am sorry to hear Mary has been so unwell. Had we better send to Montpelier after any such things as boots etc. for winter?

vorable report on my case. In body and mind I am as well as I have been for a long time except the one main difficulty - my leg. that is quite [stony?] now and I am able to walk on it considerably but the swelling has not all left it yet and exercise increases it very much. It is a slow case but I trust not incurable. I shall soon petition to be sent back to my Regt. for life here is becoming intolerable.

D.W. Stevens is still in the city - was here to see me this morning. He is looking quite well but unfit for duty. He says his discharge is made out but has not been approved yet. He is on extra duty, and can stay as long as he pleases.
