Description

(February 27, 1787 – January 10, 1879) Physician, botanist, and botanical illustrator. Jacob Bigelow was one of the founders of Mount Auburn Cemetery and served on the board of trustees from 1831-1879 and was president from 1845-1871. He did much to shape the Cemetery including designing Bigelow Chapel, Washington Tower, and the Entrance Gateway. He also served as the corresponding secretary of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society from 1829 to 1833. Husband of Mary S. Bigelow.
