D.L. Winsor Supt. 6n opening [A?][?] from Walnut to Spruce [?] Read Oct. 5. 186[?] -

[Mount Auburn,]

Dr Jacob Bigelow Pres[dt?] Mount Auburn Corporation

Dear Sir

The improvements at "Thistle Pond" has now progressed so far, that it has become necessary for the "Committee on Grounds" to settle the matter of Avenues, in order [then?] we may go on, and excavate & fill up the meadow as [was?] contemplated and be govered in doing the work hereafter accordingly as you may decide to have it laid out.

The Bank on the South side of the meadow has been cut down agreeable to your instructions [p?] d[?] more than half the distance and will when completed widen the Area of the Meadow some 40 feet and [?] very much improve the form of the open level space between the high grounds on either side, and suggest to my mind in order to perfect the whole arrangement of that piece of ground the importance of also finishing what is now known as Thistle path, into an avenue!

which will form a function with the Avenue coming round the side of the ground on the South side^^when [b?] will run into One Avenue to lead out into "Walnut Avenue" and thereby open a way from "Walnut" to "Spruce" Avenue which is very much needed to avoid taking the circuit over the Hill, into Magnolia & down Spruce, or the other circuit round by Fir Avenue and into Spruce to reach Thistle Pond

On the upper part towrad Walnut Avne are some 3 or 4 very Old & Large Oak trees the space between & the line of lots is about 18 feet which trees can be saved by making the Avenue.

The Basin is finished and we are only waiting for some 60 stones to be fitted as ornamental to the top of Bowl or basing and will if the weather continues fine be ready to let in the water in another week

Respectfully Your Most [?]

David L Winsor [S?] Mt A Cemty
