Mount Auburn Cemetery

Mount Auburn,

DoctJacob Bigelow

Dr Sir,

I wrote you a few days since informing you that one years Rent of ground, on which the Marble Shop stands, became due on the first inst. and that Mr. Mann threatened to sue McDonald unless the money was paid promptly. Mr. Read told me to tell Mc.D. to pay the Rent to the Corporation! and as he leased from MrSpooner, and the lease was made payable to Jonathan Mann, he says - " he must do so, unless the Corporation will take the responsibility" to receive the money", not having received a reply to the above letter I think perhaps the letter has [?] mislaid.

As the regular monthly meeting takes place on Monday. next. I presume something will be done in the way of making a transfer of the Lease to the Corporation! and. also. the. above matter of Rent. due. will be arranged for settlement.

I hope you will also bring before the "Board" my sugegstion to you, in regard to building on to the back of the Engine House a building, some 22 feet wide by 32 feet long, to be used as a tool House, workshop and Store House, for Cement Bricks &c in the winter season. The posts will not be over 8 feet long. Beams of Bounds neatly [ buttressed?], and Roof only shingled; and made somewht ornamental like the former one, that we have recently converted into a Blacksmiths Shop; and is now in Operation. Shoeing sleds mending wheelbarrows making and sharpening picks stone tools &c

If the Trustees will make an appropriation of $3 @ 40000 for the purpose, with a Boss carpenter and some of our Winter men: we can get it finished this winter. When all necessary Buildings for such an Establishment will be concentrated at a Central point in the grounds, and under the eye of the Engineer at all times. I think it will [?] improve the looks of the Engine House, as it now has not depth enough for such a steep roof and long chimney. Trees can be set out to surround these Buildings in the Spring, and in ^a^ short time will hide them

from view, from every quarter of the grounds.

The weather is cold and I have reduced our number of men down to some 25 men all told, which are employed mostly, in getting out Mud, and filling up with gravel the residue of Thistle Bog"

Respectfully yours

Daniel Winsor P.S. The number of Brick Graves is increasing very fast and the amount of stone work pr year has doubled since I have been here, all of which renders it important to have a proper building for Materials and to do varous kind of work in stormy weather.
