(September 6, 1805 – December 18, 1852). Horatio Greenough was the first American to make his living as a professional sculptor. Favoring a neo-classical style inspired by ancient Greece and Rome, he created busts of distinguished American leaders, artists, and thinkers, as well as monumental sculptures. His best known work is a marble sculpture of George Washington that was commissioned by the U.S. government in 1832. Greenough was also an influential art theorist. His concept of form following function, articulated in the essay collection “The Travels, Observations, and Experience of a Yankee Stonecutter” (1852), remains relevant today.
