TO THE HONORABLE VICTOR S. BRYANT, CHAIRMAN;
AND MEMBERS OF THE COMMISION ON HIGHER EDUCATION.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN:
As set forth in the statement issued to the Administrative heads of the institutions of Higher Education in North Carolina by the Honorable Victor S. Bryant, Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education in North Carolina, the request was made for a statement to be presented on the Purpose, Organization, Function, Operation and Relationship with other institutions in the State by each instiution. There follows below a statement of the Fayetteville State Teachers College, Fayetteville, North Carolina, pursuant to this request.

PURPOSE OF THE FAYETTEVILLE STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE

The Fayetteville State Teachers College is a standard State-accredited four-year Teachers College which prepares students of the Negro race for teaching in the elementary schools of the State of North Carolina. Founded in 1877, it is the oldest Teacher education institution established in North Carolina for any race. The institution is a member of the Association of Teacher Education Institutions and is accredited in Class A by the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Currently it has made application for accreditation in the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education.

Apart from its purpose of preparing Negro students for teaching in the elementay schools in the State, Fayetteville State Teachers College seeks to provide a broad general education to those Nergo citizens of the State who desires an education but who otherwise do not choose to work for a collegiate degree or to enter that field for teaching as a career. Its doors, therefore, are open to all Negro citizens of the State that are graduates of standard high schools. In recent years the services of the institution, doubtless as a result of its reputation, have been extended to Negro students outside of the State of North Carolina, which proportation of students comprieses at present then per cent of its enrollment.
