Upon reading the bill of Complt. of Wm Duckenfield Esqr. of the Prect: of Chowan
this Day, therein Setting forth that he the Sd. Wm Duckenfield abt Sixteen
years last part was & yett is Lawfully Seized in his Demean as of fee, of
in one large tract of Land in the prect. afsd. containing by estimacion fower
thousand Acres of Land bounding on Albemarle Sound Eastward & on
Salmon Creek Westward, & being thereof Soe Seized One Jno. Arderne
Esqr. coming into this Governmt: being Something related to him to
Sd. Duckenfield by intermarriage & the Sd. Jno. Arderne being in Low
circumstances & not in possession of any Vissible Estate, he the Sd. Duckenf
the better to gain credit & reputation to him the Sd. Arderne & to put him into
Possession of a Vissible Estate thereby to advance himself upon Genll
trust & Confidence wch he then Secretly reposed on the Sd. Arderne
