time for a Ship to be on her Voyage and by the time she arrives home she requires heavy repairs to fit her for the next voyage, which, together with the time that the owner's are deprived of the use of their money, and interest & insurance, altogether swallows up the profits, except the Ship comes home full. And there has of late but a small number come home full. It is by these circumstances combined that I form my opinion that the time is coming & not very long first when a depression will take place & with some will be severely felt.

8th 9 mo Our market at this time in uncommonly full of the necessaries, as well as the luxuries. Wood is dull from 6 to 6 1/2$ Corn 75 to 80, flour 6 to 6 1/2. Fruit of many kinds is very plenty. The market is overstocked with Coal.

Great improvements are making in various parts of the town, in building & repairing houses & building trading shops, which is mostly done by stranger mechanicks [MECHANICS], carpenters, masons, etc. The Nantucket lads mostly incline to a seafaring life, which is the cause of introducing strangers of all descriptions who marry & intermarry among us and become inhabitants, such as mechanics, traders and common laborers, many of the latter are Irish men. These circumstances has produced almost a revolution or an entire change in the administration of the affairs of the town.

9 mo The season past has been uncommonly dry and cold and unproductive to most kinds of vegetation.

21st Considerable rain fell today, which although late, I think it will be of some benefit to the fall year.
