22nd. 1st She had 10 boxes Candles in the Chamber which were lost, & the building was mostly burnt, so as to spoil it. The amount of loss is not ascertained, I should think it would be short of $1500.
The old Mansion home was adjoining to the Northward but was prevented from taking fire -- Which was very reasonable, considering the weather was very dry & Windy.
Many Strangers were present, they observed that had the fire been in any other place but this, it would have spread and consumed many buildings, They gave the preference to the people of Nantucket in putting out a fire.

25th.2nd. The Winter thus far has been uncommonly mild, there has been one or two cold turns & one or two Snow storms, but in both cases, they were of short duration. Many people say they never knew so much moderate weather in the Winter.
If the wind was at any point of Compass, it did not bring cold weather. The course of the weather has generally met with much rain & the winds small & prevailed easterly & southwardly with more fog than I have ever known in the Winter, frequently so dense that we could see across the harbour.

26th. This morning there is a considerable change in the Weather, A strong wind at NW, & a flight of snow that covers the ground.
As the day advances, the Snow has ceased falling & the wind abates, and the cold does not increase.
If the winter passes away so moderately, I think it will be favourable to many, particularly to the Poor who are short of Wood, & very little employment to earn much.
