1834 12 mo The alarm, or rumor of a War with France prevails very much through the country at this time. It appears by President Jackson's message presented at the opening of the present Congress, that the French government have neglected to comply to the arrangement made by the ambassadors of both Nations, to pay the Americans for the spoliations made by the French on their commerce, and recommends a law to be passed to make reprisals. The subject appears to come before the people very seriously, it does not seem that the Americans are ready to commence hostilities, but to try every means to reconcile the business without a War. The property of this country is spread partially over every part of the ocean throughout the navagable [NAVIGABLE] world. And no doubt if a War should take place the sacrifice to this country would be incalculable. And as respects Nantucket it would be nearly ruined, the Whale Ships are mostly out & many of them not expected in 2 or 3 years. "There will be War & rumors of Wars, but be ye not troubled thereat" But who can help it?

12 mo A Temperance Meeting was held at the town house to receive the report of a Committee that was appointed at the Annual mtg. And also to take into consideration the expediency of Petitioning the General Court to repeal the License law for selling ardent Spirits & recommending a Law to be made making it penal for any person to vend spiritous liquors except for medicine.
