satifactory. Though she has been in this country but a few Years
she speaks English almost perfectly, has good health, and is
willing to work. She has been receiving but $50 per month so far.
I recommend that this sum be paid her for July and August and
and that she be regularly elected Instructor in German and
French for next year at $600.
Our Instructor in Elocution has also
in the main given satisfaction so far as I have been able to
discover. The chief draw back in her case is that she has not
as much physical strength as she ought to to have. She has been
getting the same salary as Miss Evert, and I make the same
recommendation in her case with this additional provision
regard to both, that if during the year the funds in the Treasury warrants
it the Executive Committee be allowed to increase the salaries to
an amount not to exceed $60 per month for the remainder of
the year.
I can recommend no action in regard to Miss
Michael, the teacher of methods until we know what action
the School Board will take.
Some of you are aware that I
had an interview with Dr Gordy before I gave it as my
opinion that he was intellectually the best qualified man
we could get as a Professor of Pedagogy. I am glad to be able to
say that I was not mistaken in the least. He has been very
sucessful here as a teacher, and so impressed his own views and
modes of thought upon his pupils that they show his influence
very remarkably in all the studies they take under him.
On the other hand, I am sorry to find that he lacks a certain
social tact which interferes with his influence in
the Community, tho not among the students. At my suggestion,
he will make a report to you at this meeting at such a time
as may seem most convenient to you.
I should like to suggest a little change in the room rent, at present
there is more breaking of locks and injury to rooms and furniture
than need be, yet it is not easy to check our only resource of
moral {suasion?}, and that does not reach all cases. I believe that
it would be wise to make the room rent 25 cents higher than
now, and return to the occupant 20 cents at the end of the
term if he gives up his room in good condition. The various
sums due students at the end of each term can be drawn in one
amount by the President, or some member of the Faculty.
I should also like the privilege of fitting up a few rooms at a
cost of from $20 to $25 provided I am sure of an occupant for a
year who will pay a suitable rent. We frequently have young
men who would rather pay 50 cents per week for such a
room that incur a much less expense with the risk of unsold
furniture iin their minds when they are ready to leave.
