There is another want that has become quite serious, that
is a gymnasium. It occured to me that some arrangement
like the following might be made. Possibly we can combine a
work shop and gymnasium in a plain building, that will
not cost over $500.00. A workshop is much needed owing to Scarcity
of room as we are now situated. For this purpose we might
use about $150. from apparatus fund, $100. from normal fund
and the rest from Contingent fund. There is a good deal of apparatus
for sale now in Town that could be bought for about one third
first cost, or less than $50.00 and it is said to be almost as good as
new. Then too we ought to have a place where the Boys
can assemble informally in a large or small group
without using the School room or Chapel. For commencement
the following sums will be needed.
Music $5.00
Address 32.00.
Mis 25.00
$102.00
There is a small sum for City hall also for Janitor for annual
Sermon etc. The Societies will contribute a part, tho I dont know
just how much, an effort was made last winter to get
the Legislature to pass a bill authorizzing the Commissioner of
[?Co?] Schools to issue 5 Year Certificates to graduates of
our elementary normal department. It failed but we propose to
try again, meanwhile however I think it will be wise for the
Board to authorize the Faculty to announce that diplomas
be given to those completing the elementary teachers course as
well as the advanced, stating just what those courses profess like
we hope to set apart a special day next year during Commencement
Week for the graduates of the pedagogical course. The Faculty recommend
the following dregree For Bachelor of Arts Charles H. Higgins, and
Thomas W. Dick. For Master of Arts George E. de Seiguer and Henry
Humphrey. For Doctor of Divinity the Rev J.C. [illegible] of the Class of
70 and F.R. Carpenter A.M. Hon. From the gentlemen to whom we
last year gave honorary degrees, I need letters of acknowledgement
except Mr Boyd, of whom I heard nothing, nor did the Secretary I
think. I understand therefore that he does not accept the degree of
Doctor of Divinity. Later advices correct the Statement as to Mr Boyd
the Executive Committee was last year too large for its own
Concenience. It was almost impossible to get a quorum together
in fact I believe we had but one meeting during the year, so
that on almost every measure I had to consult the
members either individually or in groups. I hope the new
Committee will not contain over three members, and I am
indifferent whether the President be one or not. But it would be
well to leave a Separate committee on Formal department
