Athens, Ohio
June 7, 1930

TO THE HONORABLE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF OHIO UNIVERSITY:

Gentlemen:

I have the honor to submit the following report of the activities of Ohio University since our last meeting on June 10, 1929.

The very large enrollment of students this year speaks well for the continued growth of the University. During the academic year 1929-1930, 6,128 students
pursued regular university courses, of which number 3,604 were resident students and 2,524 were non-resident students. Of the 3,604 resident students, 2,670 were enrolled in degree courses; 627 in two-year courses; 28 graduate students; 189 unclassified; 72 music specials; and 9 auditors. The non-resident students numbered 1712 in group extension courses and 812 in correspondence study courses. Eighty-three of the eighty-eight counties of Ohio were represented; twenty-one states other than Ohio; and two
foreign countries.

The wholesome spirit of the University is evidenced by the relationship among the students and the various organizations and by the relationship between
the student body and the faculty. Within the faculty there has been an excellent spirit of cooperation.

The University has had unusual success in all inter-collegiate activities, debates, musical, contests, athletics, etc. An outstanding event of the year was the dedication of the Stadium and Playground on November 2, 1929. Despite
the very uncomfortable weather of the day, the attendance was large and the
enthusiasm high as the returning alumni and other friends of the University
witnessed their team play in a successful game against their friendly rival,
Miami University. It was plain to all that Ohio had a championship team as the
final score of the season, 306 to 14 for all opponents, proved.

The relationship existing so effectively between the University and the Board of Education of the City of Athens with regard to the use of the public schools of the City for teacher-training purposes and between the University and The Plains Board of Education for the same purpose met with similar success during the past school year between the University and the Athens Township Board of Education in the use of the Mechanicsburg School for teacher-training setivities. Students who are making preparation for teaching in city and rural schools are afforded satisfactory practice teaching facilities.

The Buildings and Grounds Committee and the Finance Committee, as
authorized by the last meeting of this Board, have proceeded with plans and the letting of the contract for the construction of the new Library, under the
direction of the State Architect.

The contracts have been awarded, as follows:
General Contract : The Hawkins Construction Company, Hewark, Ohio
Combined Bid on Plumbing and Heating : Samuel A. Esswein Plumbing and
Heating Company, Columbus, Ohio
Electric Wiring : Electric Power & Equipnent Company, Columbus, Ohio

Since our meeting last June, several changes have occurred in the personnel of the Board of Trustees.

On October 3, 1929, while sitting at his desk, Fred W. Bush suffered a stroke. He was removed to his home, and without regaining consciousness, died the following day. Mr. Bush had served faithfully as a member of this Board. His first appointment to the Board was made January 7, 1922, for a term of five
years, which expired May 14, 1927. On February 10, 1927, he was reappointed for a period of seven years, which term would have expired in May, 1934. Doubtless the Board will wish to have a minute prepared in recognition of the valuable services of Mr. Bush.

The terms of office of three members of the Board of Trustees have expired; and their successors have been appointed, as follows:

The term of David H. Thomas, Marietta, expired on May 14, 1928; Judge Thomas was appointed to suceeed himself, which appointment will continue
his term until May 14, 1935.

The term of Carl D. Sheppard, Akron, expired on May 14, 1929; Mr. Sheppard likewise was appointed to succeed himself, continuing his term until May 14, 1936.
