[11] Most Secret & Confidential [12] To, [13] Andrew Jukes Esqre [14] In charge of the Residency [15] at Bushire [16] Sir, [17] I think it necessary to apprize [18] you that Brigadier general Malcolm may be short= [19] =ly expected in this quarter in Command of a force des= [20] =tined for the occupations of the Island of Karrack - as [21] he will be of course anxious for every information you [22] can command with regard to the actual powers of defence [23] which that Island may possess, as also concerning the [24] private feelings and disposition of the person in com= [25] =mand there, I request that you will consider of any [26] means which may appear proper for procuring the [27] intelligence above alluded to without exciting the suspe= [28] =cions or alarm of the Persian Government. [29] Direct enquiries ought of course [30] to be avoided but you may in conversation pick up [31] such hints on the subject as joined to your own infor= [32] =mation may essentially benefit the public Service - [33] I have apprized general Malcolm of your presence at [34] Bushire and have no doubt but that Officer will be de= [35] = sirous to avail himself of your Service ; I would there [36] =fore recommend to you to be prepared for moving when [37] =ever he may send a vessel for your accommodation ; [38] but in making these preparations it appears of great [39] importance that none of your arrangements should [40] be such as to indicate the probability of a very long ab= [41] =sence from Bushire - that might excite suspicions [42] of the

[12] To, [13] Andrew Jukes Esqre [14] &cao- &ca- [15] Bushire [16] Sir, [17] I have the honor to acknow= [18] =ledge receipt of your letter of the Ultimo by the Fu= [19] =ry and have to return you my thanks for the [20] motives which induced you to take that Vessel off her [21] Station for the purpose of conveying to us the Packet [22] from India. She is now sent back to Bushire, and [23] I request you will again deliver to Lieut Davidson [24] the Packet of Sir Harford Jones to the address of Briga [25] =dier general Malcolm, directing him to resume his [26] station according to the orders he received from His [27] Excellency. you will also be pleased to desire Lieutt- [28] Davidson to speak all Vessels coming from India [29] and, should he fall in with Brigadier General Malcolm, [30] to deliver to him the Packet , which I now send for [31] that Officer, along with that of Sir Harford Jones, should [32] he fall in with any Vessel bearing Dispatches to my [33] address , you will direct him to return with such [34] Vessel to Bushire ; and should you learn by any [35] communications you may receive, or enquires you [36] may make, that the return of Brigadier General [37] Malcolm to the Gulph is postponed, be pleased to for= [38] =ward by the Fury , the despatches for me, together with [40] the Packet of Sir Harford Jones to the address of Bri= [41] =gadier General Malcolm. - If on the contrary you [42] learn , that General Malcolm is on his way to the [43] Gulph , you will immediately return the Fury to [44] her Station, and direct the Officer commanding that [45] Vessel to take every precaution on his power for the [46] delivery of Sir Harford's Packet previously to the de= [47] =barkation of general Malcolm. The for= [17] =mer you will have the goodness to expedite to Bom= [18] =bay by the first opportunity, giving directions to des= [19] =troy it, in case of danger from the Enemy, and the [20] latter you will also be good enough to put into the [21] hands of Genl.
