was lying in a stupor when I went down there to learn all I
could -- he died about day break -- One of the pillars of

with unrelenting diligence -- and all were captured but one,
who was never heard of again-; he was supposed to have been
killed in the woods -- Genl J. J. Dickison who was then
living in Quincy, took the lead in the pursuit -- with a
track dog, whose services were invaluable -- One of the
negroes, named Sam -- turned states evidence, & saved his
neck-; the rest -- Gabe -- Lewis -- Charles (a mere boy) &
old Booker -- were tried by an able & impartial courtm & all
were hung -- on the same gibbet on the following Nov. 2nd
Ex Gov. M. L. Stearnes; the carpet bag ruler of the state
was present during the whole trial, & was satisfied with its
impartial justice -- Jno R. Jordan was sheriff-; he got Dr
Telfair, to be present at the execution, and as he was going
in (Telfair) -- he asked me to go with him -- I went in the
jail yard with him, and the poor wretches were brought out --
& ascended the ladder -- with their hands bound behind them --
Gabe first-; his eyes closed, & his round, bullet head jerking
spasmodically from side to side, whilst he was shouting in a
hysterical manner -- "Glory" -- "glory" -- "glory"-; the
others looked cowed & overwhelmed-; the lad Charles made a
