hill. One deceased teacher has labored
in this academy 18 years. In the eulogy
by Prof. Barrows reference was made to his
character in somewhat the following style.
"The last time I was called to officiate at the
funeral of one of the members of this church
it was over the remains of one who devoted
all his time & talents to elevate the Academy
(refering to Prof. Farrer]) he died a good old
age like a ripe shock of corn ready to be
gathered. He was 90 years old. But this one was
called away in the prime of life (48 years) & in the
midst of his usefulness." He spoke in glowing
terms of his piety & his skill as a mathematician.
He then addressed his remarks to the students of
Phillip Academy. "Conscience was his rule of
action. For him to know his duty was for him
to do it." Besides "He followed the rule of conscience
promptly, thoroughly, & faithfully." He made
excellent address & exhorted the students to follow
his example for while he was under instruction
"he gave his heart to the Savior & that Savior
did not desert him in his death bed."
