Sunday Feb. 25th Made the land at sundown
supposed to be Mount Elliot, reefed topsails and
hove to, lookout on the fore topsailyard all
night reported breakers ahead three or four
times each time wore ship; between 3 & 4 a.m.
Feb 26th touched slightly aft, kept away before the
wind; shortly after grounded aft and stuck,
sea very smooth; hands at the pumps, water
gaining, rudder unshipped, large leak in the
run, Captain Stratman left at day break
in the large whale-boat with six hands.
at daylight land in sight to W.S.W.

the stern boat got adrift with three men,
the second whale boat went to tow her up.
two rafts were launched and dropped astern,
between seven & eight a.m. water washing
over port covering board; went to the main-
top with beef, water and clothes.

the "Maria" filled and fell over to port, with
about twenty feet of starboard quarter,
and half of fore and main top masts above
