application to the Colonial Committee of the Church of
Scotland for a small grant to meritorious young men,
who have not otherwise the means of prosecuting their
Studies.

Many of the Students come from a distance. They
have a long, and expensive journey to perform, both in coming
up to, and in leaving College, and, while there, their Board.
even at the most moderate rate, amounts to about £15
per annum. At the same time, the small emoluments, in
general, of the Ministry of the Church in Canada cannot
be expected to furnish any inducement, in a worldly
point of view, to the ^[superscript]sons of the[/superscript] affluent. In these circumstances,
the number is comparatively small of the those who are
disposed to prosecute their studies for the Ministry,
and to go through a long, and expensive training with
this view, and at the same time are able to do as
unassisted. The want of pecuniary means with which
many of the Students have to struggle, has often painfully
forced itself on the attention of the Professors, and
has a very injurious influence in hindering the unembarassed,
& regular prosecution of the Studies of the Students
