spiritual enfranchisement, who caught his spirit and who
will seek to perpetuate what was best in his work for
Church and Country.
The Synod extends its sympathy to Mr. W. L. Grant in his
imparable loss, and also the Senate and Trustees of
Queen's University, praying that they may have all
needed wisdom and strength to carry on the work for
which Principal Grant gave his life."
Action on the changes proposed in the Constitution of the
University, and already more than once referred to,
was left in aleyance wntil the appointment of a new
Principal.
Chancellor Fleming, a generous friend of the University,
and a man of exceptional public spirit, and broad and
progressive scientific sympathies, was one of the earliest
advocates of a Pacific Telegraph Cable. That enterprise
was now completed, and the Board took occation to
congratulate the Chancellor on the event, and on the
worthy part he had taken in arousing interest in that
great project. These years, the University was steadily
moving onward and upward, necessitating additional
outlay for increased staff and enlarged accomodation;
and, as far as possible, these vital urgencies were attended to.
The Alma Mater Society, was granted permission to place
