and was recognized as one of the ablest Chancery lawyers in
the country. From his student days to the end of his
life he took a keen and active part in the affairs of the
University. The occasions that called for service were not

"His well-trained mind, and unimpeachable moral
character, were a constant source of strength to her", and
especially so during his long occupancy of the chief seat at
the Board. His Alma Mater is proud to have the "name

representation and benefactors". A bronze, commemorating
his distinguished connection with the University, has
been placed in Convocation Hall.

the devoted, beloved Chancellor of the University. It rejoiced

life, and noble character. His had been an active and splendid
career. Scottish born, he came in early manhood to Canada,
and at once identified himself closely with the public and
education interests of his adopted country. He loved the Old
Land, and he loved the new. He was again and again closely
connected with expeditions and ventures destined to play a
most important in the development and history of Canada.
