When the library was small, and contained but a scorer
of a thousand books, and elementary system of catagorizing sufficed.
But now with a very much enlarged staff, and
extended curriculum, and body of students, and a library
nearing 100,000 volumes, and a large and valuable collection
of pamphlets, reports, and papers, as modern and standard
methods of cataloguing became indispensable. Recognizing
this, it was decided to engage an expert for the work, and
the necassary assistants, and as a preliminary grant of
$7,600.00 was voted for that purposes. And shortly after,
Miss Lawrence was engaged to direct this new department.

Staff appointments and salaries were again revised,
and, as far as revenue permitted, adjustments and promotions
were made. A bequest of $10,000.00 from Hugh
Watson of Montreal was for help with this directions.

Since the board meeting (April '15) the University
suffered a severe loss in the death of three honoured members,
who had served it long, and with unstinted devotion,
Hon. Justice James Maclennan, H.C., Cbairman from
1890 to 1912; Sir Sandford Fleming, H.C.M.G., C. E,
LL.D., Chancellor from 1880 to 1915; and Mr. Donald
Bar Maclennan, H.C., whose informed opinion and
rigor judgment were at the service of the University for
more than a score and a half of years.

James Maclennan graduated from Queen's 1849.
A few years later, he became a member of the Ontario Bar,
