to their incomes. The expense of living had increased more
than 50 per cent, but while the salary of those in the same
chairs in Montreal and Toronto were from $2,500 to $3,400,
they had, during a period of a very low state of the College
revenues, patiently submitted to the insufficent incomes which
they had been receiving. The Trustees cordially acknowledged
the force of the appeal, and resolved to raise their salaries to
$2000 each, and that of the Principal to $2500, with the use
of the house then occupied by him. The Board felt at the same
time that they would have difficulty in providing for this additional
expenditure, unless steps were taken to increase the
revenues of the University, and therefore agreed earnestly to
entreat the Synod to consider favorably any proposal that
may be submitted for its sanction with the view of assisting
the Trustees to give permanent effect to their resolution.

The Board, further, taking into consideration the valuable
and devoted services of Mr Ireland as Secretary-Treasurer of
the College, and the great increase of responsibility and labour
imposed upon him in connection with the management of the
Endowment Fund, agreed to increase his salary to $600 per annum.
