60/166 9th February, 1860. [overwritten in red] Collector of Customs With reference to appointments of a Sub Collector at Port Curtis.
Customs Brisbane 1 Feby 1860
Sir I have the honor to enclose for the Information of His Excellency the Governor copies of letters which I yesterday received via Sydney from the Government Resident at Port Curtis and from the Sub Collectors of Customs at Rockhampton, which may be taken as evidence that, in urging the appointment of a Sub Collector at Port Curtis (which His Excellency has been pleased recently to make) I have not overrated the great necessity for the creation of such an office.
With reference to that portion of Mr Brown's letter soliciting the acceptance of another officer, I beg to

inform you that I have directed Mr Brown, as a temporary arrangement, to engage, when there may be a vessel discharging at his Port, some respectable person to act as Extra [...Ede...] at 10/6 p day. When employed, and in the event of two or more vessels being discharged [heavily crossed out wording replaced with'at the same time'] at the same time, to procure the services of two or even more persons if required at the same rate.
Though this is anything but a satisfactory or regular expedient it is preferable to leaving the protection of the Revenue solely to the unassisted efforts of the Sub Collector who can find full occupation in his office and I trust my directions in this matter will meet with the approval of the Government.
In the course of a couple of months I hope that my office hire will be in sufficiently good working order to advent of my inspecting Rockhampton
