should obtain specimens of
the Whitefish in certain lakes
or other waters in which these
fish can be readily captured; and
that these specimens should be
sent to me by Express, together with
the dates, and the particular lakes
in which they were caught-- and
twenty females from each lake
is [precause?] the quota to be [taken?]-- on
the [Tahush?] I would suggest that a
proportion of this number be [?]
say 2/3 females and 1/3 males
so that way the development of the
procreative organs of both sexes
will be equally shown and the
desired results more fully estab-
lished.

In all other matters the
suggestions sent you from Ottawa
are full, and require no further
comment from me. Should you
however desire any information
from me that I may be [Exactful?]
to give, to aid you in carrying
out the wishes of the Dept. be kind
enough to write me, and I will
cooperate with you in the
[undertaking?].

have died from the extreme scarcity
of the food which formed [ice?] in the
very bottom of the ponds - a few
however did Escape and grew to
a good size, but were lost to us by
the breaking of the dams.

There are great [numbers?]
of lakes in Manitoba, many of
these are large and well supplied
with White-fish and Salmon trout,
others contain less [areas?], and
are inhabited with Pike, Bass, Perch
etc. -- Some of the latter from their
shallow marshing surroundings are
considered well adapted for the growth
of Carp and it is proposed to stock
some of these with those species of
fish.

I shall feel much
indebted to you for the information
asked for, and also for such
suggestions as will possibly lead
to a successful planting of German
Carp in our Western Waters.

The Recto page was difficult to transcribe. I discovered, however, that the following bleeding-through page was more legible. I flipped that page horizontally to be right-reading, and transcribed the letter from it. This technique may prove useful for other difficult pages. This was done in the Preview program (on a Mac) but any basic image editing software will suffice.
