Manitoba waters, and I should
infer also in Ontario; I shall
gladly assist in whatever way
it may be considered necessary
in forwarding the enterprise;
and to specifically answer your
telegram, I would suggest such
waters as the following in Ontario.
Rice Lake; Scugog Lake; the
Hamilton Bay; Toronto Bay;
the Ottawa River ; and other large
rivers of a like nature. The Rideau
Canal, and Bays connected
with it, would be suitable, especially
as in the drawing off the waters from
it, some of the carp would be found
which would give evidence of their
growth, upon which to base data
for future operations.

With regard to Manitoba:--
waters of a like description should
be selected, but it is impossible
for me to particularize, as I have
no personal knowledge of those waters.

I am Sir
Your Obdlly
Sam Wilmot
Supt.

P.S. Whilst treating upon the
prospect of introducing Carp into the
Canadian waters I might here state
that to carry out the venture in an
independent manner, and to supply
such application as may be made for
them in the future a stock of trading
fish should be kept in some locality
in order to give an annual crop of fry
for distribution, thus preventing the ne-
cessity of asking the U.S. Govt
supplier of these fish for our waters.

There are at the present time four,
or five ponds within the grounds of the
Newcastle Establishment, which by a
small expenditure for deepening them,
would become well adapted for keeping
a stock of parent Carp. Their present
depth is to too shallow to [warrant?] [depth?]
to the Carp during their dormant
state through the severity of the winter
months: Carp burrow in the muddy
bottoms like Eels in very cold weather,
but it is essential that the water should
be sufficiently deep to prevent the ice
forming down to the bottom of the
ponds.
