1859, April Col. Barney to Bishop Polk, re: A draft of a letter about funds to carry on the topographical survey and the long delay of Col. Colyar to pay what was due whcih is placing him in an embarassing situation; appealing to him to make some arrangement to relieve him from his circumstances of being without funds; concern over timber that has been cut and taken away without the right by Mr. Tracy; advising that a timely remonstrance might save for the University good timber for building. More details about surveys, etc. 4 pp.

1859, April 24 - [pencil note: Missing] The Rt. Rev. James H. Otey, Memphis, Tenn., to Col. Barney, re: Authorizing him to draw on Bishop Polk the amount of $500.00 to be used to complete the surveys for the University; informing him of his serious illness; asking him if he would receive his 17 year old son to work under him and learn the business of surveying, asking no wages for him, and offering to pay his room and board. 2 pp.

1859, May 9 A. S. Colyar, to Col. Barney, re: Stating that Mr. Richardson desires to get one of the cabins, and recommending him as a man of good character; speaks of other persons who are at the Springs without authority and the importance of upholding the rights of the University with these men. 3 pp.

1859, May 24 The Rt. Rev. James H. Otey, Memphis, Tennessee, to Col. Barney, re: An authorization for him to construct one double or two single cabins for the accommodation of visitors to the grounds of the University. 1 p.

1859, June 15 The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, New Orleans, La., to Col. Barney, re: Stressing the importance of the completion of the Map by the 18th of August; a discussion of Mr. Tracy and his stating that there is imperfection in the diagram shown by Col. 1859, Nov. 30 The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, Savannah, Ga., to Col. Barney, re: Announcing his arrival in Savannah on behalf of the University; his visitations to many schools and Universities; his persuading Bishop Hopkins to come out to Sewanee to give his aid in laying out the grounds; announcing that he and Bishop Elliott would arrive on the Mountain the 9th or 10th of December; mentions the credit for the University which has satisfied his money wants; requesting him to have the cabins ready with furniture, etc., and a gentle horse for Bishop Hopkins. 4 pp.

1859, Dec. 2 The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, Savannah, Ga., to Col. Barney, re: Informing him that Bishop Otey had sent him his letter of appeal for aid in funds; expressing his regret that he had been so annoyed, asking him to ask his good people to have patience, etc .... 2 pp.

Barney, re: Informing him that Bishop Elliott could not leave at present and their arrival would be delayed a few days; mentioning the arrival of Bishop Hopkins on the Mountain in the meantime; more discussions about University matters. 3 pp. [pencil note: asking him to pick out the 1000 acres for University proper]

Barney, re: Money matters; encouraging remarks about the meeting at Winchester relating to the turnpike; an account of mishaps on the train from Cowan to Atlanta, ie, high waters and a smash up near Anderson; discusses the plan and cost of his house to be built in Sewanee, preferring Mr. Castleberry to Mr. Judd to do the work; messages to Bishop Hopkins. 3 pp.

1860, Jan. 7 P. A. Mitchell, Tracy City, Tenn., to A. M. Kelly, re: His violation of cutting timber near the railroad track. 1 p. Note: This letter was probably placed in the hands of Col. Barney for his attention.

1860, Jan. 9 Col. Barney, University Place, to P. A. Mitchell, re: Emphatically stating that Mr. Kelly was not trespassing when cutting timber near the railroad tracks; that the timber is on the University property and was cut for the use of the University under his instructions; more details on this. 2 pp.

Barney, re: Money matters; acknowledging receipt of the estimate of his house in Sewanee, saying that he could not spend more than $600.00 for it; describing the sort of log house he wishes; tells of success in collecting funds - the amount of $25,000.00. 3 pp.

1860, Jan. 25 The Rt. Rev. Leonidas Polk, Montgomery, Ala., to Col. Barney, re: The planning of An avenue, giving his suggestions; the clearing of woods for several buildings, and also the clearing of trees along the sides of the road leading from the town so as to make a pleasing sight for persons arriving by R. R.; more about the avenues, suggesting to have cross avenues named after the Dioceses; reporting on funds collected; messages to Bishop Hopkins. 3 pp.

1860, Jan 26 P. A. Mitchell, Tracy City, Tenn., to Col. Barney, re: The question of ownership of timber along the R. R. track - the statement from the Board of Directors of the Sewanee Mining Co.; informing him that the Company authorized free passes over their roads for the President and Executive Committee of the University of the South and asked for their names. 1 p.
