Dear Sir

I regret that my engagements forbid
my accepting your polite invitation to be
present at the laying of the corner stone of
the Southern University.

In common with all who, though from afar,
reverance learning I sympathise very truly
with an enterprise which {illegible} to accom
-plish so much for its advancement.

I cannot but hope large results in the
future, from the eminent success already
attained & with an earnest desire that your
wishes fixed upon the object so worthy &
advanced by exertions so {illegible: bold?} {illegible: directed?} &
persevering{?} may be {illegible} accomplished.
