Dear Sir,

My host, Genl{?} {illegible}
of Lytle, who is temporarily dis-
-abled from using a pen, handed
me a note this morning from you
directed to himself, extending an
invitation for him to attend the
laying of the Corner Stone of the
University of the South on the 10th
inst. & requesting an early answer.

He desired me to reply to it, &
say that while acknowledging the kind
courtesy conveyed by the invitation, he
regrets very much that it will be
out of his power to be present
on the occasion referred to, to
