Dear Sir,

I have received your
letter, as chairman of the Executive Committee
of the University of the South, inviting me to be
present, the 10th Inst., at the laying of the corner
stone of the principal building of the University.

It is with unfeigned regret that I deny my-
self the gratification of being present on so in-
=teresting an occasion; and witnessing the begin
=ning of an Isntitution destined by the provi
dence of God to dispense to thousands the
blessings of a religious and thorough education -
- to add luster{?} to our state -- and allure to
it generous spirits who may thirst for and be
eager in persuit of knowledge and wisdom.

A long absence from home renders it
necessary that I should attend to my private
and professional affairs -- Be pleased to return
my acknowledgments to the Executive Committee for
their polite invitation, and for yourself accept
the assurances of my esteem -- my congratulations at the in
{illegible} of the good work you have in hand, & sincere wishes
for its completion & success -- Yours most respectfully
