Your favor
of the 5th ult. inviting me to be
present at the laying of "the
Corner Stone of the principal buil-
ding of the University of the South"
on the 10th inst. has just been
received, having been, by mistake,
addressed to me at Sparta.

It would give me great pleas-
ure to be present at the highly
interesting occasion of begin-
ning an enterprize which is
destined, I doubt not, to exert
the most satutary{?} influence upon
American civilization; but
my engagements here are of so binding
