Memphis Oct. 6th 1860

Rt. Rev. Jas. H. Otey

University Place, Tenn.

Dear Sir,

I am today
in receipt of your esteemed favor of
the 5th ult. inviting me to be
present at the "laying of the corner-
stone of the principal building of
the University of the South."

Much as I should like to attend
upon that interesting occasion, in
which every true Southerner must take
pride, I am nevertheless constrained
by previous engagements to decline.

Wishing abundant success to
the enterprise, and uninterrupted
health & prosperity to you, I have
the honor to be, Sir

Your very obedient servant
