Having just learned
that Genl. Gorgas has been appointed
Chief of the Junior Department of the
Institution over which you preside, &
what the opinions of these, qualified,
by personal knowledge, to speak of
his fitness for this position, might be
useful to his interests, I beg leave,
briefly, to say, that I know him
well, and entertain a very high es-
timate of his abilities, and the highest
respect for his characer as a man.
My duties, during the Southern struggle
for Independence, brought me into bus-
iness and social relations with
Genl. Gorgas, and enabled me to
judge of him correctly. His
duties were important and arduous,
demanding a rare combination
of talent, information, scientific
