Stevedores, Longshoremen and Riggers Union
of Puget Sound

Branch No.2 P O Box
Seattle, Wash Ter Nov 8 1889

To the Honorable Mayor and Common Council of the City of Seattle:
Gentlemen:
We the undersigned Stevedores, Longshoremen,
and other citizens of Seattle doing business on the wharves and
along the water front, would most respectfully petition your hon-
orable body to grant permission to the "Stevedores, Longshoremen
and Riggers Union of Seattle
" to erect a structure or building
about 25 x 30 feet at the foot of Main Street on the West side of
Railroad Avenue, to be used as a reading room and headquarters
for Stevedores and Longshoremen of said union. We would res-
pectfully represent that the place desires is not occupied nor
used for a street, being beyond the end of the street as new piled
and by the erection of said structure there will be no interfer-
ence with navigation or with the rights of wharf owners adjoining
thereto. We would further represent that such a place would be of
great benefit not only to the members of this Union but
to all persons requiring the loading and inloading of freight
along the wharves and especially to those doing business along the
water front in furnishing a place where men can be easily found
