94 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE The council proceeds to open the bids for the cleaning of the cemetery; the following bids have been received, viz, from B.F. Day for $180 per acre, J.H. Henry & J.M. Hoffman 600 for 2 acres, B.F. Lillie for $149 per acre, Patrick Forest $174 per acre, Walter France for $165 per acre. The bid of B.F. Lillie bring the lowest it is ordered that the contract be awarded to him at $149 per acre. Ordered that a warrant for $3250.00 be drawn on the fire fund in favor of John Collins, the proceeds to be used for the purchase of a new ground fire engine. And now in pursuance of notice duly published the council proceeds to the equalization of the special assessment polls under ordinance No 284, 281, and 276. No complaints being made against either of said special assessments it is ordered that they be and they are hereby accepted and approved. The Ordinance Committee are instructed to submit ordinances levying taxes in accordance with the provisions of ordinances Nos 284 and 281. The assessment roll under ordinance No 282, is laid over until next meeting of the council. Ordered that the council stand adjourned until Friday July 14th 1882. Smith and councilmen Thos Clancy, M. Densmore, Wm A. Jennings, G.L. Manning, and Chas McDonald and John Keenan. Thereupon the following proceedings are had. A communication is received from the Chief of Police recommending the dismissal of John Baker from the police force. Ordered that the power to make assests be withdrawn

95 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE. July 14/82 and is hereby withdrawn from said John Baker. The Street committee to whom was referred the bids on Stewart, Tenth and Virginia streets submit their report thereon recommending that said bids be rejected. Ordered that all the bids received for the construction of said sidewalks be and they are hereby rejected. The Street committee report on the petition of Portman, Padden & Co et al, whereupon said petition is granted, and the construction of a street crossing in accordance with the prayer thereof ordered. And now comes Geo. W Walsh and makes application for a grocery license for a period of three months beginning July 16th and at the same time said applicant files his bond in accordance with the ordinance relative thereto. After due examination said bond is approved and the said applicant making due proof that he is a man of good moral character it is therefore ordered that theclerk be and he is hereby instructed to issue a grocery license to said applicant for said period of three months. And now the ordinance committee submit Ordinance No 290,the same being entitled-"An Ordinance to License Tax and Regulate Threatics, Shows, and other Exhibitions and PublicAmusements" After dueconsiderationsaid ordinance is adopted by the following ovet, towit: In favor of adoption, Thos Clancy, M Densmore, Wm A Jennings, G L Manning, Chas McDonald and John Keenan; Against adoption, none. And now the Ordinance committee submit Ordinance No291 the same being entitled - "An Ordinance to provide for the procuring of an additional Steam Fire Engine" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted bythe folowing vote to wit: In favor of adoption Thos Clancy, M Densmore, Wm A Jennings, G L Manning, Chas McDonald and John Keenan. Against adoption, none. And now the Ordinance Committee submit Ordinance No 292 the same being entitles. "A special ordinance toprovide for the grading and improvement of Washington Street from the East Line of Commercial Street to the center line of Fifteenth Street in the City

A petition is received from the Trustees of the M E Church asking for the refunding of $10.00 license collected from Miss A R Luce Said petition is granted and it is ordered that a warrant for $10.00 be drawn on the City fund in favor of Chas K Jenner The Street Committee report on the petitionof the Sisters of Charity praying for the vacation of the alley in Block 18 in Borens addition to Seattle. Ordered that said petition be granted and said alley be and hereby is declared vacated. Ordered that the chief of Police be and he hereby instructed to employ 20 Special Police for one week The Finanace Committee report on the Semi-annual Report fo the City Treasurer; whereupon said Report of the treasurer is approved by the Council, accepted and ordered placed on file.
