506 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE July 18/84 Be it remembered that on this the 18th day of July, 8114 the Common Council of the City of Seattel meets in its CouncilChamber pursuant to the call of His onor the Mayor H G Struve. The following Officers are present to wit: His Honor the Mayor H G Struve and Councilmen Thos Clancy, B F Day, John Keenen, Chas McDonald, B L Northrup, Otto Ranke, U M Rasin & F W Wusthoff. Thereupon the following proceedings are had: Petitions rec'd From Kate Regan for removalof racks & Rubbish from property. Rejected From W R Brawley et al for improving Front Street between Pike and Wall Streets for Street Railway. Granted & Street Commissioner instructed to Make the improvements prayed for. From Chief of Police for an increase of salary to $150.00 per month granted Atty instructed to submit an Ordinance therefor. From Gordon Hardware Co for the right to keep powder in Store Granted upon the condition that the Committee on Fire & Water are satified that the place of storage is safe. Licenses Ordered Issued L B Parker for grocery license for 3 months from July 12, 1884 F Claus for grocery license for 3 months from July 12 Miles & McCormick for retail license for 3 months from July 15 Wm Busha forretail license for 3 months from July 17 Miles & Thomas for retail license for 3 months from July 17 Claims PIad The following claims having been duly audited by the council are ordered paid by Warrants drawn on the funds & in the amounts following To wit: City Fund E S Osborne Services as Registrar No 745 $157.95 S D HoweMember of the Board of Registration 746 $15. 508 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE July 18/84 Battery Streets which bids are as follows to wit: J T Jordan $3900. W C Muir $3800. Ordered that the bids be rejected And now the Council proceeds to open & consider the bids for the sewer in Madison Street which bids are as follows to wit: J T Jordan per running foot $1.60 Wm Harkins per running foot $1.18 Ordered that the contract be awarded to Wm Harkins upon his Executing a bond in the sum of $500.00 Ordered that the time for completion of said Improvement be & is hereby fixed at October 1,1884 And now the Council proceeds to open & Consider the bids for the grading of Front, Kentucky, Harrison & Temperance Streets under Ordinance No 565, which bids are as follows to wit: Wm Harkins Earthwork per yd. 32 cents Cribbing per sq yd $2.50 Sidewalk per M B M [thousand board feet] $14. Box Dains per M B M [thousand board feet] $17. Grubbing & Clearing per acre $100. Or for the total sum of $8400.00 S G Simpson Earthwork per yd. 28 cents Cribbing per sq yd $2. Sidewalk per M B M [thousand board feet] $13. Box Dains per M B M [thousand board feet] $20. Grubbing & Clearing per acre $100. Orderd that the Contract be & is hereby awarded to S G Simpson upon his executing a bond inthe sum of $4000.00 Ordered that the time for the completion of said Improvement be & is bereby fixed at Nov 1,1884 And now the Council proceeds to open and consider the bids for the Improvement of Fifth Street under Ordinance No 573 which bids are as follows to wit:

Box Dains per M B M [thousand board feet] $20. Grubbing & Clearing per acre $100. S G Simpson Earthwork per yd. 33 cents Cribbing per sq yd $2. Sidewalk per M B M [thousand board feet] $13.50 Box Dains per M B M [thousand board feet] $20. Grubbing & Clearing per acre $100. [information above is drawn into a table] Orderd that the contract be & is hereby awarded to Wm Harkins upon his executing a bond in the sum of $1500.00 Ordered tthat the time for the completion of said improvement be & is hereby fixed at Oct 1,1884 Ordered that the chairman of the Gas Comtee be & is hereby instructed to procure 6 new "Boulevard" lamps Ordinances An Ordinance is submitted entitled "To amend section 2 of Ordinance No 574" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Day, Keenen, McDonald, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff. Against adoption Northrup The Atty submits an ordinance entitled "To amend section 11 ofOrdinance No 246 in action to pay fees and compensation of the City Officers" After due consideration said Ordin-ance is adopted upon the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Keenen, McDonald, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff. Against adoption Day & Northrup An Ordinance is submitted entitled "A Special Ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" After due consideration said Ordinance is adopted upon the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Day,Keenen, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff. Against adoption none. An Ordinance is submitted entitled "To appropriate three hundred dollars for the purchase of a hose cart" adopted upon the following vote, to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy, Day,Keenen, McDonald, Northrup, Ranke, Rasin & Wusthoff. Referred to Police Comtee. From Preston Nott & Co offering to furnish an Amos King Steam Fire Engine. Referred to Special Comtee on purchasing an Engine with instructions to confer with the Chief of the Fire Dept and Chief Engineer. Communications Rec'd From Chief Lind resigning as a member of the Police force Resignation Accepted Reprots Rec'd From Surveyor submitting a plat of the new Cemetary referred to Comtee on Public Grounds From Atty on the petitions of G N Alexander to construct Jackson Street Grade [?] into City funds [?] referred to Judiciary Comtee
