729 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jan 4 1886 Be it remembered that on this 4th day of January 1886, the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council chamber pursuant to call, the following officers being present, viz: His Honor the Mayor Henry L Yesler and Councilmen J Furth, H Calligan, W A Harrington, Geo W Hall, John Keenen T W Lake, Charles McDonald, J J Post And G W Young when the following proceedings were had to wit: Petitions and Communications Petition of J W VanBrocklein et al praying that the sidewalk of Terrace Street between Fourth Street and Sixth Street be repaired. Read and Referred to Street Com. Petition of A Elliott et al praying that a certain portion of Jackson Street be planked. Read and Referred to Street Committee and recommended by said committee that the petition be laid on the table. Report adopted and petition tabled. Petition of Frankenthal Bros et al praying that Jackson Street be planked from Commercial Street to Third Street twenty four feet in width. Read and on motion said is granted in so far as to plank said street from Commercial Street to the planking on Second Street 24 feet wide. Petition of J B Collins and J Howson praying that boot blacks be licensed in the City of Seattle read and on motion tabled. Petition of W R Brawley et al praying that the north side of Main Street be planked. Read and referred to Street Committee Petition of Wm M Preston praying taht Box Street be opened, read and referred to Street Committee

730 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Jan 4 1886 Petition of M Korn et al praying that the police force be allowed the sum of $60. dollars each for the pruchase of Uniforms & Revolvers. Read and referred to the comittee on Health and Police. Petition of A M Pinckney to be appointed special policeman without compensation from the City Read and on motion granted. Communicationfrom Chief of Police rec'd and read and referred to Com. on Health and Police Communication from Walter Graham offering to furnish the City with 250 evergreen trees for Seattle Park for the Cost of Transportation Read and referred to the Com on Public Grounds Reports Report of G A Hill City Justice, Geo G Lyon Justice of the Peace and the City Jailor for the month of December referred to Committee on Judiciary & returned approved. Report of Street Commisssioners for Month of Dec referred to Street Committee examined and approved Report of Harbor Master showing Harbor dues collected to the amount of $33.15 read and referred to Committee on Harbors and Wharves. Committee Reports Received From Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds reporting that the City Stable ordered built had beem completed with the exception of painting at a total cost of $420.58 and the building is superior in every respect to the one originally planned. Report approved and ordered filed.

731 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jan 4 1886 From Committee on Fire And Water recommending that the petition of Fred Klenen for permission to maintain a wooden partition constructed in his store at 814 front Street be granted. On motion the report is adopted. Councilman Calligan voting no. From Same Committee reporting that the site of the sunken steamer Mississippi had been properly marked adopted From Committee on Health & Police recommending that the petition of Patrick Flynn et al for the establishing of a free soup house by the city benot granted for the reason that the Committee does not think the same necessary of expedient. Adopted Frm Street committee reporting that Depot Street had been opened as petition for Adopted From Same Committee recommending that the matter for opening Lenora Street and Olive Street be laid over for the preent. Adopted From Same Committee presenting a majority report in the matter of the Lincoln Street bridge recommending that a new bridge be built, Adopted Councilman Calligan voting no and On motion the Street Commissioner is instructed to progress towards a selecting a practicable route to the head of the Bay for a new road. Report read and ordered filed and the Committee directed to secure the reight of way across private property free of charge to the City and report at the next meeting.

On motion it is ordered that the City Attorney be and he is hereby directed to take the necessary steps to collect the several amounts due the city for for theater and exhibition.
