Philip Evans Thomas has been
called the father of the Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad. He was its first presi-
dent.

John Elgar invented the type of
hinge used inthe Capitol Building,
Washington, D.C.

The great Benjamin Hallowell with
his national reputation as a scholar and
educator came to live in the neighbor-
hood. While head of a school in Alex-
andria he taught such illustrations per-
sons as Robert E and Fitzhugh Lee.

The telephone was invented by Alex-
ander Graham Bell in 1876, and we find
this entry in the first volume of the "Anals
of Sandy Spring" for the year beginning
Fourth Month, 1877 and ending Fourth
Month 1878: "The telephone which is to
the telegraph as Raphael to a house-
painter, has been erected, actually
placing in closest and tenderest con-
nection the two historical mansions
Sharon and Brooke Grove.
