A revival was essential and it
came ushering in the third period.
It was necessary to find a way to im-
prove the land. The first experiment
was made with lime. Bone dust
was next used for the first time in
1839 and a few years later, in 1844, that
miracle of agriculture - Peruvian
guano - was brought into the vicinity
in appreciable quantities.

Redical improvement had started and
was certain to continue. The young people
did nto have to emigrate to newer, rich-
er soil. Newcomers from without
the borders of the neighborhood immigrated
to it and contributed in many ways
