About
For this Transcribe-A-Thon, we will be transcribing documents from Sandy Spring resident Mary Magruder. Born in Brookeville in 1865, Mary would spend the entire 80 years of her life as an active member of the Sandy Spring community. First serving as a teacher, she would later become the county’s first school attendance officer, ensuring local children were attending public schools after the passing of new attendance laws in 1916. When not working, Mary was a member of several local social clubs, including the Mutual Improvement Association, the Home Service Committee, and the Wednesday Club. Mary was also active in multiple political movements, serving as a member of the Maryland Women’s Suffrage Association and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. She was also a devout Quaker, constantly attending and delivering sermons at the Sandy Spring Meeting House. All of these activities are reflected in her diaries, scrapbooks, and notebooks that we will be transcribing. Come join us as we try to learn more about Mary and the Sandy Spring community from over 100 years ago!
