Longwood

5th Mo 7th 1872

Our society met at Longwood and not withstanding the warm day we had a good attendance of members and numerous visitors.

All seemed to manifest an interest in the business of the meeting and answers to questions which is a convincing argument of the good of the institution. The exhibition table displayed some fine bouquets and but two lots of vegetables. The extensive Lawn in front of the house was very much admired for its variety of trees. Everygreens, shrubs, roses flowers &c. all of which were flourishing and many of them in tastefully arranged beds and boxes. After reading the minutes and answering questions we visited the garden where we saw a fine potatoe patch, some very large heads of Lettuce and several other things that looked well but the new hot beds, filled with large healthy looking plants attracted especial interest and for some of the ladies a row of newly planted rose-bushes of numerous choice varieties seemed to possess a great charm.

Avalon VI Mo. IV. 1872

The Horticultural met at Alban and Rachel Gilpin's and the heavy shower of rain that had just fallen not only brightened up vegetation but also the faces of those present, as the exceed ingly dry weather has continued since the meeting at Longwood one month ago and has had its affect upon our gardens. The attendance of members was up to an average and there were sever -al guests present.

The grounds around the house were in excellent condition, as were also the gardens; the flower garden was visited first in our walk and displayed a variety of roses and flowers (that were much admired) and was a pattern of neatness. The vegetable garden was also in excellent condition, and judging from the black rich appearance of the soil, will furnish an abundant supply of vegetables.

The flower tables were crowded with beautiful bouquets there being two from Longwood two from Brooke Grove two from Spring dale, one each from Norwood, Hermon, Olney, Rock Spring, Stanmore, Edgewood Alloway and not the least beautiful one furnished by our guest from Walnut Hill.
